Pet Pals

4-H, along with Ingrid Norris and the Spartanburg Humane Society will sponsor a program intended to educate children on the benefits and responsibilites associated with pet ownership.  Each month throughout the school year, Ms. Norris will attend the 4-H meeting at an individual AYC location.  She will bring animals from the Spartanburg Humane Society for a live demonstration on how to care for a pet.  Topics may include training, grooming, first aid, and other general responsibilities associated with pet ownership.

Super Kids

Super Kids continues to be a huge success at all AYC sites. This program teaches on three dimensions; nutrition, fitness/wellness, and character development.  This is an innovative program that was developed as a competition between AYC sites.  The site that implements the most programs wins a wacky field day and fresh healthy snacks as a prize.  This is measured using 6 criteria:

  • Class Discussion
  • Activity
  • Craft
  • Creative Arts
  • Spreading the Word
  • Guest Speaker

This program allows for the children to help in planning activities by giving them specific ways they can contribute to the education process.  All of these programs are fun and actively engages the participants in the learning process; which allows for behavioral and attitudinal changes.  Congratulations to Superkids for the wonderful things you accomplish each school year!

Risk Watch

Safety is the top priority of AYC.  In order to help children identify risks in the environment SCPD has teamed up with Sarah Dubose, a Child Injury Prevention Coordinator for Clemson Extension Program, in order to promote safety in the environment.  Sarah Dubose generously provided many age appropriate workbooks, videos, games, and curriculum guides that focus on child safety issues.  Throughout the fall and winter months AYC will teach a "Risk Watch" class once a month that highlights a safety prevention theme such as pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, and bus safety.  During Spring and Summer months AYC and Day Camps will teach water safety, fire safety, and poison control safety.  These lessons are taught by utilizing fun and engaging activities throughout the year.

Staff Development

SCPD carefully selects and screens every AYC staff member prior to them being hired.  Each candidate must undergo a SLED Background check, Sex Offenders Registry is also checked, a drug screen, and an interview process that requires each candidate to provide personal references, school and work history information.  SCPD recruits heavily from local colleges and universities in order to hire the most educated and competent staff that will work in the program.  Once an individual has been hired they must undergo an initial training period where they shadow lead counselors and are trained under direct supervision.

Each staff member must also complete online training: National Youth Leadership Training.  There are also several Red Cross classes that staff must take in order to stay current in Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification.  Throughout the year SCPD also provides several mandatory staff training sessions that include safety training, behavior modification of children, program development, and fun ideas for new games and crafts.
